Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) is a refrigerant chemical that the federal government has officially banned, and which should have been phased out of use by 2000. The manufacture of this compound has been phased out because it contributes to ozone depletion in the upper atmosphere. CFC has been replaced by safer compounds such as R-410A. CFC is not an environmentally preferable product.
