History for Job Simplification (history as of 08/26/2014 11:10:45)

Job simplification is a job design technique in which jobs are broken into relatively simple tasks. It aims at greater productivity through reduced application of mental and/or physical effort. See also time and motion study. Job simplification includes evaluating the work processes methods and procedures, for multiple workers performing the same task. It is important to include any task that is required to perform, such as ergonomic concerns, such as reaching, bending, twisting, lifting, and standing for extended periods of time.

The use of video recording of the target job is a very effective tool for later studies and analysis. Often time there is more observed on the video from those familiar with the job, than what they see each day. This can be a true eye-opener for those responsible for the work process.
Counting the number of steps and the frequency taken to perform the task throughout the shift can be another great surprise. The goal in this situation is to minimize the distanced and frequency traveled.
BOTTON LINE:
Job simplification begins with observation, listening and asking.
What is working well and what is not?
What is causing extra cycle time?
Is there excess travel?
Is there any searching for parts or materials or information?
Is there any sharing of small tools or small equipment?
If yes to any of these questions, then find out WHY.
Simplifying the job brings the training of new employees, as well as cross-training of existing employees much easier.
