Job simplification is a job design technique in which jobs are broken into relatively simple tasks. It aims at greater productivity through reduced application of mental and/or physical effort. Job simplification includes evaluating the work processes methods and procedures, for multiple workers performing the same task. It is important to include any task that is required to be performed, such as ergonomic concerns like reaching, bending, twisting, lifting, and standing for extended periods of time.
The use of video recording of the target job is a very effective tool for later studies and analysis. Often time there is more observed on the video from those familiar with the job than what they see each day. This can be a true eye-opener for those responsible for the work process. Simplifying the job brings the training of new employees, as well as cross-training of existing employees much easier.
