Dead-heading refers to a train, railroad car, airplane, truck, or any other commercial vehicle that operates empty as it returns to a distribution center to pick up more goods. Dead-heading is usually preferred to be avoided by any carrier, as it uses the vehicles resources without carrying any goods to its destination.
